Jambalaya WFO Lake Charles Fall 2004 Another line of severe thunderstorms developed later in the evening across Southeast Texas, and moved eastward across southwest Louisiana through the early morning hours. Nickel to golf ball size hail, downed trees and power lines, and funnel clouds were all reported with this line of storms along an over 100 mile path. ... In the case of a failure in any component of a sensor, we utilize our knowledge of operations, system technical manuals, test equipment, and our personal troubleshooting abilities to return any defective system to operation. For instance, a problem in the rain gauge may result from possible defects in a power supply, or the arithmetic function of the CPU. Electronics Technicians maintain a comprehensive supply of spare parts, such as circuit boards, that always travel with us in our work vehicles. ... [Read More]

Profiles in Renewable Energy: Case Studies of Successful Utility-Sector Projects Several additional external factors contributed to the USW success, including the federal and state tax incentives of the early 1980s and support of the state regulatory commission with regard to the utility power purchase contracts. In addition, a need for power existed in the state, state energy policy is supportive of renewable energy development, and the power generated by the wind projects is supplied to large utilities with power systems that can easily accommodate the intermittent wind system power output. To date, transmission has not been an issue for USW projects because these projects have been located close to existing transmission facilities. ... [Read More]
NIST Tech Beat, September 1999 Its not easy to make accurate measurements of vitamins. They are usually mixed in with other complex molecules in complex substances, like food or blood. Doctors and nutritionists actively studying the health benefits of vitamins, such as A, E and beta carotene, must compare results from different labs. Thats why the labs need a certified reference material for helping determine the accuracy of their own results. NISTs Standard Reference Materials Program offers a certified reference material for fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids in human serum (SRM 968C) to allow them to do that. ... [Read More]
History and Culture - Volume 2 - Draft Heritage Study and Environmental Assessment During the preceding decades, the lower Mississippi Delta region sought to increase the region’s industrial base. Memphis became one of the lower Delta region’s few industrial centers with the establishment of Ford and International Harvester plants. Mississippi initiated a state-sponsored program in 1936 to attract new industry. From 1936 to 1955, 138 industries located in Mississippi as a result of the state’s active recruiting and willingness to fund bond initiatives, such as the $4,750,000 made available in 1951 for the construction of the Greenville Mills. The Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company located a large plant at Natchez as a result of a generous subsidy. This company gave a new look and a new economic stimulus to the old cotton and river city. Other industries in Mississippi produce clothing, furniture, paper, glassware, light bulbs, building supplies, and farm implements. ... [Read More]
Avian Collision and Electrocution: An Annotated Bibliography This annotated bibliography was initiated as a result of rising concern throughout the world about the losses of birds due to collisions with power lines and other wires, towers, wind turbines, and other structures, and from electrocution by power lines. We hope that the information contained in this bibliography will help reduce these unnecessary losses. This information can be used to improve the planning, structure configuration and design, siting location, and mitigation measures for new projects and for potential retrofit efforts where appropriate. These considerations would result in benefits to world bird populations and assist in avoiding costly delays and maintenance efforts resulting from bird collision and electrocution mortality. As the world's human population grows and development expands into rural and other undeveloped areas, the impact of engineered structures on bird populations becomes increasingly critical. I hope this annotated list will provide assistance to both ... [Read More]
