Cane River Creole National Historical Park (National Park Service)
The Cane River National Heritage Area extends westward from Interstate 49 to the Red River and includes everything in between. The Heritage Area's north/south boundaries are marked by the City of Natchitoches on the north side and Monette's Ferry to the south. Some of the sites in the heritage area include the Kate Chopin House and the state commemorative areas of Los Adaes, Fort Jesup, and Fort St. Jean Baptiste. Total acreage for the Heritage is approximatly 116,000 acres. In Natchitoches, Louisiana, Christmas celebrations include fireworks, a parade, and the Festival of Lights. This festival started in the 1920s, when the city's new chief electrician got the idea that stringing Christmas lights along Front Street would be a nice Christmas present from the Power & Light Department to the citizens of the town. Local businesses donated money for the lights, and every year since then the light show has expanded with more lights and events to celebrate the Christmas season. In the late 1930s, the town started the fireworks displays and soon thereafter started to hold parades, including a parade of Christmas-decorated barges on the Cane River. Cane River Creole National Historical Park is located within the Cane River National Heritage Area in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The park includes 42 acres of Oakland Plantation and 18 acres of Magnolia Plantation. The two park sites include a total of 67 historic structures remnant from 200 years of plantation life. Due to the preservation and restoration work in progress on these buildings and the grounds, there are limited services available to the public. There is much work to be accomplished, but seeing the work in progress is an incredible opportunity that all are welcome to experience.
