Photo Gallery - Flower Garden Banks
Located 110 miles off the coasts of Texas and Louisiana, Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary hosts the northernmost coral reefs in the United States. Rising to within 66 feet of the surface, the Banks are an attractive home for shallow water Caribbean reef fishes and invertebrates. Today it has become a premier diving destination and attracts scientists from around the world. ...

The sanctuary is divided into three separate parts. The East and West Banks cover an area 41.7 square nautical miles in size, containing 350 acres of reef crest. A small third bank, Stetson Bank, measures about 800m long and 300m wide and is located about 70 nautical miles south of Galveston, Texas. Stetson Bank does not have reef forming corals like those found at the East and West Flower Garden Banks. Instead, Stetson Bank is capped by uplifted layers of claystone and sandstone which have eroded at unequal rates to create a strange "moonscape" appearance, and is home to many species of invertebrates and fish. ... NMS - Marine Sanctuaries - Flower Gardens
Each year on the eighth day after an August full moon, the waters of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary explode in a riot of incandescent white as coral reefs begin spawning. This event, described by some as an "upside down snowstorm," was first discovered by a recreational diver in 1990, but the beauty and fecundity of the twin salt domes that make up Flower Garden Banks Sanctuary was known well over 100 years ago. Snapper fishermen who cast their nets into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico spotted "gardens" of corals and sponges 50 to 100 feet below the surface. The area remained a well kept secret until the 1930s when chartmakers located and mapped the area. Geologists studying two of the reefs' shallowest features began to suspect that the Flower Garden Banks might harbor tropical corals. In the early 1960s divers from the Houston Museum of Natural Science were greeted by massive coral reefs and dense schools of tropical fish, manta rays, turtles, and sharks. During t ... [Read More]

Louisiana Governor's Office
After graduating from the university, Governor Foster joined the Air Force and served in the Korean War. After returning home to Franklin from the war, he began farming sugar cane and soon after formed Bayou Sale Contractors, primarily as a means to keep his farm crew together in the off-season. Additionally, the Governor has been a board member of several local banks, a junior warden of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, the president of the St. Mary Parish Farm Bureau, and a member of the American Legion. Over the years, he has accumulated several business and pilot licenses, including single engine, land and sea multi-engine and instructor, and is currently working towards his helicopter pilot's license. He also attends law school at Southern University, proving that Governor Foster exemplifies a true modern-day renaissance man. ... [Read More]

Flower Garden Banks NMS - Partners & Volunteers
Even before the Flower Garden Banks were designated as a National Marine Sanctuary, Dr. Steve Gittings was actively involved in their protection through his research efforts. As a protégé of Dr. Tom Bright, Steve was also involved in the process of designating the sanctuary and ultimately was selected as the first Sanctuary Manager. With an almost non-existent budget, no staff and even no office initially, Steve went to work building the program. His energy, enthusiasm, knowledge and charisma earned many friends for the sanctuary. He developed partnerships with universities, non-profit organizations, the recreational dive community and other government agencies. This was especially crucial to success in those first few years when budget and staff were so limited. In his low-key style, Steve focused on developing the research and education/outreach components of the program. By the time he moved on, he had increased the staff and greatly increased the original budget, not ... [Read More]
