Although the emphasis was on fun, the jug bands sang about the same subjects as their more straightforward blues contemporaries—empty pockets, empty love, hard traveling and addictions. The affluent attendees of the Kentucky Derby attracted jug bands by the dozens to Louisville each year, where they played on the streets hoping to be tapped as the entertainment for a Derby party.
