The Tuscaloosa Formation, the basal unit of the Cretaceous sediments along the eastern edge of theMississippi Embayment area of western Kentucky, consists largely of well-rounded, waterworn, nonmarinepebbles and boulders derived from Mississippian and Devonian cherts. Gravels from the Tuscaloosa wereonce used for roads, railroad ballast, and other construction and building purposes in several westernKentucky counties, but because of the presence of deleterious chert they are not currently used in significantquantities for concrete aggregate, being replaced by crushed limestone.
