Sold as a slave at the age of seven from the steps of the Fayette County courthouse to the owner of the renowned Woodburn Stud farm, Edward Dudley Brown worked as a groom and mucker-outer while sleeping in the barn, rose to be a jockey, grew too heavy for that, and turned to training. He ended with four Derby winners, including 1881's Hindoo, who that year won an unbelievable 18 races in as many starts.
