Kentucky Colonel

Kentucky: Secretary of State - Kentucky Colonels
In 1928, an effort began to organize the Colonels into “A great non-political brotherhood for the advancement of Kentucky and Kentuckians.” In 1932, The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels was formally born. Today, the organization is incorporated as a charitable organization with by-laws directing it to be non-partisan, non-profit and dedicated to good works within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Over the years, the Colonels have contributed millions of dollars to worthy causes. In 2003, with voluntary donations from all 50 states and 23 other nations, the Good Works Program Fund made grants totaling $1.3 million to 153 charitable and educational organizations. It marked the thirteenth consecutive year grants of at least one million dollars had been made. In addition to their collective charitable efforts, Colonels are Kentucky's ambassadors of goodwill and fellowship around the world. The organization's website can be accessed at: http://www.kycolonels.org .* ... [Read More]

JACKSON, KY – (June 14, 2005) -- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet today honored two employees of the Department of Highways Lee County maintenance crew for their heroic efforts to rescue a motorist trapped by floodwaters on April 30. On behalf of Gov. Ernie Fletcher and acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert, Highway Commissioner Marc D. At Home in Kentucky
There is a germ of truth in every cliche. Take for example that oft-cited representative of the Bluegrass State, the Kentucky colonel. I suppose the most historically prominent of the genus is Harland Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame, with white suit and string tie, little white mustache and goatee, and benevolent expression. (In real life, I was told, he was an explosive, near-violent perfectionist. But then, you don't get your image on 10,000 restaurants and millions of takeout buckets by lazing around the old veranda.) I had skipped a visit to the museum complete with his original cooking implements in Corbin, some 50 miles from Middlesboro, and later in Louisville gave only a passing glance to KFC international headquarters, known as the White House, for its resemblance to the one in Washington. But at the Boone Tavern Hotel it came to me how beautifully Colonel San-ders's act would play there. In the magnificent parlors so splendidly outfitted with student-made furniture (f ...
