KFC’s Claims That Fried Chicken Is a Way to “Eat Better” Don’t Fly KFC Corporation, owner of the Kentucky Fried Chicken national restaurant chain, has settled Federal Trade Commission charges that it made false claims in a national television advertising campaign about the relative nutritional value and healthiness of its fried chicken. The Commission also charged the company with making false claims that its fried chicken is compatible with certain popular weight-loss programs. The proposed settlement will prohibit the company from making these or similar claims about the nutritional value, weight-loss benefits, or other health benefits of its chicken products and meals unless the company can substantiate the claims. Even then, when you break down and walk into the nearest Kentucky Fried Chicken and sit down feeling slightly abashed at being a white guy eating fried chicken in Egypt (even though the restaurant is filled mostly by Egyptians eating the same thing), you look down at the menu and half of it is beautiful. Not to bash English, because I love English. I speak it, after all. But the Arabic script is such that you can write, "side order of mashed potatoes, $3.50," and wish it were carved in stone. ...
