Untitled Document Natural gas has become the chief focus of Oman 's economic diversification strategy. Intense exploration has raised proven natural gas reserves from only 12.3 Tcf in 1992 to 29 Tcf in 2004, according to the Oil and Gas Journal . The government is also continuing its aggressive exploration campaign. Most of Oman 's reserves are in PDO-owned areas, and the company is Oman 's biggest natural gas producer. Most gas in Oman is associated with oil, but even that which is non-associated is often located close to the country's oil fields. More than 10 Tcf of Oman 's non-associated natural gas is located in deep geological structures, many of which are beneath active oil fields. In 2002, Oman is estimated to have produced 530 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas. ... [Read More]
NSSL's mobile lab helping to solve natural gas mystery T he Kansas Geological Survey and the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) requested the use of one of NSSL's mobile labs to investigate a natural gas seepage under the city of Hutchinson, KS for nine days in April. Les Showell, NSSL special projects consultant, released a helium balloon carrying a radiosonde each day during the investigation. Information on wind speed and direction, air temperature, air pressure and humidity readings were transmitted to a computer in the mobile lab. At the same time, researchers from NASA's JPL were in a plane carrying an airborne spectrometer making measurements of the infrared signature of methane gas escaping from Kansas Gas Service's Yaggy storage field. Information collected by the project will allow researchers to plot maps of the gas at various places. ... [Read More]

Retail Unbundling - Kansas Legislation became effective on August 4, 1999, that allows natural gas utilities to file voluntary plans for unbundling, subject to approval by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. These plans must include provisions for service reliability, market power safeguards, consumer education, and affiliate participation requirements. When a plan has been approved, utility delivery service will be provided separately from gas sales and consumers will have the option of purchasing gas from an alternative supplier. All utility services will remain regulated until one-third of the utility's customers have chosen an alternative supplier (18 percent of the customers must choose an unaffiliated supplier) and at least five unaffiliated suppliers are operating within the utility's service area.
