To recognize the contribution citizens make in helping to keep our hometowns secure, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge and other high-level Department officials are meeting with volunteers active in Citizen Corps when they travel across the country ... George Lennon Davis II of Detroit, Michigan greeted Secretary Ridge in Detroit on February 27. Mr. Davis is a CERT trainer and volunteer in Detroit and is a certified Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) through FEMA and the Michigan State Police. He also hosts a local radio show called Safe and Secure Detroit, dedicated to issues of public safety and emergency preparedness. Mr. Davis served under former Mayor Dennis Archer as an assistant for public safety, specializing in emergency management. During the terrorist attacks of September 11 and its aftermath, Mr. Davis was part of the City of Detroit's local response team, which focused on coordination of the reported anthrax cases in Detroit. He also played an integral role in the planning of the OAS Conference held in Windsor, Ontario in 2001 for potential terrorist attacks. Mr. Davis currently chairs the Business and Industry Sub-Committee of the Detroit Local Emergency Planning Committee, which helps plan for chemical emergencies. U ... [Read More]

"Neighborhood Services" works to improve the coordination of neighborhood assets and helps residents access and align City resources through training, education, enhanced communication and information sharing, and to assist in the identification and representation of community needs for the continued development and revitalization of the community. "Planned Progress" began as a coalition, spearheaded by the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with concerned residents, community organizations, and the city government to obtain input and identify the improvements that the community felt was needed. After an aggressive "My Neighborhood Now" grassroots campaign and extensive community meetings, residents agreed to pass general obligation bonds so that the improvements would become possible. U.S. Department of Homeland Security – Homeland Security’s National Preparedness Month activities will include initiatives related to the Ready campaign as well as events hosted by Citizen Corps. In September, DHS will build on its Ready campaign, a national public education effort launched in 2003 in partnership with the Ad Council designed to educate and empower individuals to prepare for emergencies by getting a kit, making a family communications plan and being informed about potential threats. Ready for Business will be launched to educate small and medium-sized businesses about safeguarding their employees and assets while preparing for business continuity in the event of a disaster. The Iowa City Former Manufactured Gas Plant (FMGP) site is located at 505 Burlington Street, inIowa City, Johnson County, Iowa. A coal gas production facility occupied the site from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1930's. In subsequent years, all coal gas production equipment wasremoved, and later the site was put to varied uses, including a utility company storage area and abus garage (1). The FMGP site lies in an extensively developed, mixed commercial and residentialarea. It is bounded on the north and east by single and multi-family residences, and on the south andwest by small commercial firms.
