The Newton Correctional Facility provides 24-hour health care coverage to over 1,100 offenders. The Health System team works together to provide services including medical, nursing, dental, pharmacy, optometry, radiology and laboratory. The team is comprised of nurses, nursing unit coordinators and others working together to provide care to offenders and employees. Correctional nursing offers a challenging and rewarding career to health care professionals. ... Iowa Medical and Classification Center is the departments reception center for all new commitments to the correctional system. The population incarcerated can vary from youths to aged adults, and include both women and men, from the healthy through the chronically ill, mentally ill, and the developmentally disabled. The major thrust of nursing care at IMCC is providing primary care serves for the incarcerated population through screening activities, direct patient care, analyzing individual health behaviors, teaching, and assisting individuals in assuming responsibility for their own health to the best of their ability, knowledge and circumstances. IMCC also has a 23 bed licensed psychiatric forensic hospital located within the facility. Nursing staff on the forensic hospital are an integral part of a treatment team providing mental health care and evaluation for the correctional system as well as the Iowa Criminal Justice System.
