Brandon Dahlke, 27, of Montgomery and Michael Eurkaitis, 32, of Plainfield each were sentenced to 12 months probation, a $500 fine and $25 per month probation fees. ARGONNE, Ill. (May 4, 2001) — A team of students from Plainfield High School today won the fourth annual Illinois state championship Rube Goldberg machine contest at the Chicago Children's Museum on Navy Pier. This is the third consecutive year that Plainfield has won the championship. ... The nine-member Plainfield team defeated five other Illinois high schools by building the wackiest machine to secure, raise and wave a national flag. Because the tornado developed extremely rapidly, it was notdetected by the conventional radar systems in use; a moresensitive Doppler radar was not in use because of a previousmalfunction. The affected area was served by two emergencywarning sirens; however, because official tornado spotters hadnot observed funnel clouds, the sirens were sounded only afterthe tornado began its destructive course through the town ofPlainfield.
