Description: Long-term (15 months), high-resolution measurements of currents, water levels, temperature, salinity and turbidity were made off West Maui, Hawaii, in 2001-2003 to better understand coastal dynamics in coral reef habitats. ... [Read More]

EPA - Envirofacts Warehouse - PCS - Query Form User's Guide
Mapping Info: Provides facility latitude and longitude coordinates, and the ability to generate maps using Envirofacts mapping applications. ...

PCS facilities obtain a permit from EPA or a State authority which "permits" the facility to discharge specified pollutants up to a defined limit. Certain parameters (chemicals, water temperature, oxygen content, etc.) of the facility discharge are monitored by EPA or the State to ensure that the facility does not exceed its permit. The output identifies the geographic location of the facility, the discharge points (pipes) of the facility, and the parameters that are monitored for each discharge point. The output, organized by facility, is shown first in a label format, followed by a tabular listing of the additional information. ... [Read More]

Ethanol fuel for Hawaii
Six-page memo from Fuels Studies and Standards Branch to Fuels Studies and Standards Group, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, discussing ethanol-blended gasoline. Concludes that humidity will not lead to phase separation. "...At a temperature of 70 degrees and relative humidity of 70%, it would take over two years to saturate one gallon of conventional gasoline [in an open gasoline can]... oxygenated gasolines can hold more water than conventional gasoline, and would therefore take much longer..." ... The Task Force meeting also served as a forum for Commerce Department Deputy Secretary Robert Mallett to announce several new programs designed to better protect the nation's coral reefs and ensure their long-term ecological and economic vitality. The new programs include increased monitoring of water quality and biological diversity in critical coral reef systems including pristine coral areas off the coast of Florida; grant awards for monitoring and education projects in U.S. Territories and Hawaii; additional funds for local-level coral conservation projects; and expanded mapping of U.S. coral reef ecosystems to help local, state and federal decision-makers protect valuable coral reefs. NOAA Ocean Explorer: Northwestern Hawaiian Islands
The ship is using two Simrad multibeam sonar systems to map the 25 and 100 fathom depth curves around the islands, reefs, and seamounts. They are the EM120, which is a 12 kHz deep water sonar, and the EM1002, which a 98 KHz shallow to mid-water sonar. This technology allows scientists to send out hundreds of ...

We plan to finish mapping around Nihoa today. Before continuing to the next survey area, we will explore a new canyon we discovered last night which may actually be the remains of a huge underwater landslide. Chief scientist, John Smith, and hydrographer, Jeremy Weirich, will also conduct a live phone interview with KidScience, a weekly educational program, which will broadcast to schools throughout the Pacific Islands. ... NWS Tallahassee| Marine Weather
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issues wind, wave and weather forecasts for the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico from the Suwannee River to Destin, FL, out to 60 nautical miles from shore. We also raise Small Craft Advisories, Gale Warnings, and other marine flags as necessary. To learn more about the advisory and warning headlines in our forecasts, see our Marine Weather FAQ page . ...

Online Science Resource Locator Results: Corals
Coral reef ecosystems in the Florida Keys, Hawaii, and the U.S.-affiliated islands in the Pacific and Caribbean thrive in clear, nutrient-poor waters. Small increases in the nutrient content of coastal waters (associated with fertilizer and sewage discharge) may upset the fragile balance necessary to maintain the health of economically important coral reefs. Additional detrimental effects may be caused as well by increased turbidity due to anthropogenic activity and by increased salinity due to poor water management practices. ... [Read More]

Loihi Submarine Volcano: A unique, natural extremophile laboratory
Loihi submarine volcano is the most recent expression of the hotspot that produces the Hawaiian Island chain (Fig. 1) . Loihi arises from the submarine slopes of Mauna Loa and is growing along its active SE-rift zone by the extrusion of pillow lava and tubular basalts. Located 34 km SE of the Island of Hawaii, the summit of Loihi is 1000 m below the ocean surface. This location makes Loihi an ideal site for submarine neovolcanic exploration since it is a short 24-hour cruise, by ship, from the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL) located at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. Three pit craters occupy the summit of Loihi. The southernmost crater, Pele's Pit, formed during a two-week seismic swarm in 1996 that collapsed the hydrothermally active cone Pele's Vents. The new pit has steep walls with the floor located 200 meters below the rim of the crater. The crater floor and north slope are sites of spectacular and extensive hydrothermal venting with water temperatures rangin ... [Read More]
