Hawaii Dinner Cruise
NeMO July 21, 2001 What's for dinner? Out at sea dinner could be anything from Yankee pot roast, to seafood flown in from Hawaii, to something exotic like a stir fry with pot stickers and sesame soba noodles when you have experienced cooks planning and preparing 3 meals a day for the duration of the cruise. With the creativity they bring to the galley, more... ... NOAA Ship Ron Brown - ROV Cruise ... [Read More]
Effect of the Passenger Services Act on the Domestic Cruise Industry Last year, Congress enacted a U.S.-flag cruise ship pilot project that is designed to jump start the U.S.-flag cruise industry and cruise ship construction in U.S. shipyards, which have not built cruise ships in more than 40 years. As a result, the American Classic Voyages Company recently announced plans to build two ocean going cruise ships for the Hawaiian market and five coastal passenger vessels to operate along the U.S. coast in 1999. Each of these vessels will be built in a U.S. shipyard. ... [Read More]
NeMO Cruise 1999 I am a Professor at the University of Florida (home of the"fighting Gators") and specialize in Igneous Petrology (the study of rocksthat form from magma) and Marine Geology. My first cruise was to theCaribbean Sea when I was a graduate student and at that time, I was soseasick that I vowed I would never go again. But here I am again, nearly25 years and 17 cruises later, enjoying the science, adventure andcamaraderie of being at sea. I look forward to working with manyscientists and students with diverse backgrounds and interests and thediscoveries that come from our multidisciplinary method of studying theseafloor. I have participated on many cruises using the manned submersible ALVIN , but this is the first time I have had the opportunity to use ROPOS .Even though we work very long and sometimes erratic hours, I find itrelaxing to be away from the daily confusion in my office and satisfyingto be focused on one objective . I can also avoid cooking, cleaning andmowing the lawn! Howe ... [Read More]
NOAA Ocean Explorer: Mountains in the Sea The artist who drew this image is eight-year-old Jenna Watling. Her father, Dr. Les Watling, is the chief scientist of this cruise. As chief scientist, he wears many hats and is responsible for all scientific aspects of the cruise including data and specimen collection. Jenna drew this sketch during dinner the night before Atlantis left Woods Hole, MA. As you can see, she has a clear idea of just what her father is doing todayhe is in Alvin exploring Manning seamount as I write this. Jenna drew her rendition of the ship Atlantis , the Alvin submarine, the underwater mountains, corals, and sponges that are associated with this cruise. My job as the artist connected with this leg of the cruise is to review hours of videotape to paint the mountains deep in the ocean where light does not penetrate so that we might understand the topography and the scope of the seamount. Jenna and I are 50 years apart in age, but my early drawings were very similar to hers. Every time one does ... [Read More]
NeMO Cruise 1998 - Teacher Logbook There is not much else to report tonight. The scientists are beginning to workon their summaries for the cruise log that will be published soon. Theirhomework assignment, and mine, is to have the summary written and submitted tothe chief scientist before we land in Victoria. Other than that the big news onboard is that ... Dive/Cruise Plan ... We are underway, bound for Victoria. We managed to get our last dive in lateyesterday. The extensometers were positioned on the ocean floor and we had one last chanceto visit the site at CASM (Canadian-American Sea Mount ) where all of this begana decade and a half ago with the discovery of the first hot vents in the NorthPacific . The three scientists and two Pisces pilots who were involved in thatdiscovery are reunited on this cruise. (photo left: l-r, top: Kim Juniper , Keith Shepherd ,Bob Holland, bottom: Verena Tunnicliffe , and Steve Scott )There were many changes at CASM compared to the first visit. Many dead tube worms littered thesite, but other life forms were doing very well. One of the largest populationsof palm worms yet discovered was seen. One of the big questions for biologistsis how these vents become populated in the first place, and once they are, howdoes the population change over time? The ability to visit a site over a periodof time will help to answer questi ... [Read More]

Submarine classification varies according to their specific purpose. Attack submarines, such as those in the Seawolf class, are designed to assure naval superiority over other countries. Their missions include anti-submarine, anti-ship and strike warfare. The strike warfare mission includes attacking surface targets with cruise missiles. Navy submarines successfully launched Tomahawk cruise missiles during "Operation Desert Storm." Additionally, Attack submarines collect intelligence information and deliver and support Special Forces units. They are exceptionally quiet, fast, well-armed and equipped with advanced sensor systems. The newest version of this type of submarine is the Virginia class, which is designed for battle space dominance. The other major class of Attack submarines is the Los Angeles class, which makes up the bulk of this type of submarine. Some Benjamin Franklin class Ballistic Missile submarines, which have been removed from that role as a result of the St ... [Read More]
