Aquatic Temperature Mapping Hawaii
Coastal Remote Sensing Publication - Links to More Information - Living Resources Aerial photography of Chincoteague Bay, Virginia, revealed damage to submerged aquatic vegetation that was caused by clam dredges. The photographs can be used to map and monitor the submerged aquatic vegetation beds and were a valuable piece of information in developing regulations to protect these areas. ... NOAA Miami Regional Library Submerged Aquatic Vegetation: Data development and Applied Uses. This CD-ROM is the first of its kind and focuses on providing submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) mapping methodologies, overview information about SAV, and examples of how the data are being used to address coastal management issues. Additionally, this CD-ROM highlights the newly evolved Benthic Habitat Mapping (BHM) project at NOAA Coastal Center. ... TOGA ( Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere ). This CD is a product of the WMO and WCPR containing data sets for 1985 and 1986. Variables on the CD-ROM are barometric pressure, surface air temperature, dewpoint temperature, Cartesian components of surface wind, surface sensible and latent heat fluxes, sea level, sea surface temperature, and depth profiles of temperature and current in the upper ocean. Some data are global and some are regional. ... [Read More]
STATE OF ALASKA The Noxious WeedControl Board and departments of Agriculture, Ecology, and Natural Resourcesmanage non-native aquatic and wetland plant species. The Noxious Weed Control Board lists non-native noxious plantsthat adversely affect agricultural and natural areas and oversees the work ofcounty noxious weed control boards to control the introduction and spread ofthese species. The Department ofAgriculture maintains a plant quarantine list of species that may not betransported, bought or sold in the state. The department also coordinates andadministers a program to eradicate and control the spread of Spartina spp . and purple loosestrifethat invade estuaries and wetlands. TheDepartment of Natural Resources manages, controls, and eradicates aquaticnuisance plant and animal species on state-owned lands. The Department of Ecology administersfinancial and technical assistance programs to eliminate noxious non-native aquaticplants in Washington’s lakes and rivers. The Department of ... [Read More]

Organic Aquaculture The Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 (OFPA), from which current USDA standards were derived, addressed “aquatic species” in its definition of livestock: “The term ‘livestock’ means any cattle, sheep, goats, swine, poultry, equine animals used for food or in the production of food, fish used for food, wild or domesticated game, or other non-plant life.” [ Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 , 6502 Definitions] However, the Final Rule, as issued, did not present specific standards for the production and labeling of aquatic species or for aquaculture operations. Recognizing the lack of commonly accepted certification programs for aquatic operations, including aquaculture, and the limited models on which to base national standards, NOP staff made the decision to delay presenting standards for selected commodities, including aquatic species, until a later date. ... Western Regional Panel, Minutes of Annual Meeting 4. This past summer the Division of Aquatic Resources under DLNR contracted with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to develop an aquatic invasive species management plan for the State of Hawaii. To obtain public input on aquatic invasive species issues and concerns, several stakeholder meetings were conducted statewide. A steering committee was also formed to assist in the development of a draft version of the plan, and at one of the meetings included a presentation by Scott Smith, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator from the State of Washington. The draft plan is now being finalized and will be presented to the Chairperson of DLNR for his approval. The plan can then be forwarded to the National Invasive Species Task Force for their review and comment. ... [Read More]
USGS PIERC Annotated Bibliography The effects of leaf pubescence and rosette geometry on thermal balance were studied in a subspecies of a Hawaiian giant rosette plant, Argyroxiphium sandwicense . This species, a member of the silversword alliance, grows above 2000 m elevation in the alpine zone of two Hawaiian volcanoes. Model simulations of bud temperatures at different elevations and laboratory estimates of the temperature threshold for permanent heat injury predicted that the lower altitude limit should be approximately 1900 m, which is reasonably close the lower limit of distribution of A. sandwicense on Haleakala volcano. ... NBII - Pacific Basin Information Node- Marine Conservation Page Marine conservation tends to focus on conserving the plant and animal life of the oceans, because it iseasy for humans to keep track of hard-to-see changes in temperature or salinity by monitoring the healthof the plants and animals that live in the environment. If they start getting sick, something must be wrong. When we know something is wrong, we can investigate the cause. Over the years of investigation, we canbuild large collections of data. Then scientists can use the data to see trends, such as temperature cyclesthat affect everything from the plants and animals to the weather. More ? ... [Read More]
NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program: Brochure Rivers and lakes are important resources in the vast majority ofNational Park System units. In some units, like Delaware Water Gap,rivers and lakes are the principle resources defining the park'soverall significance and character. Other parks have their nationalsignificance tied to lakes, such as Crater Lake. Still other parks, such as Yosemite, possess major river and lake resources inaddition to other primary resources. Because most river corridor parks encompass only very smallportions of their associated watersheds, they are particularlyvulnerable to land use activities occurring outside of parkboundaries. The aquatic, riparian, and recreational resourcesassociated with lakes and rivers need management and protection. Inthe case of major riverways, aquatic resources are integrallydependent upon physical factors such as flow regimes, waterquality, floodplain and riparian condition, and channel conditionsand processes. Similarly, with major lake parks, complex hydrologicpathways to a ... [Read More]
USGS FY 2002 Budget Justification Mercury Levels Examined in Tree Swallows at Acadia National Park -- Rising concentrations of mercury in atmospheric deposition, and steadily increasing numbers of advisories against the consumption of fish due to mercury contamination have led USGS scientists to assess the exposure, accumulation, and effects of mercury in several locations throughout the country. Because concentration increases as mercury rises through the food chain, particularly in aquatic food environments, much of the research has focused on fish-eating animals. High concentrations of mercury in fish at Acadia National Park prompted interest in determining if locally breeding birds also were exposed to mercury through their aquatic insect foods. In a recent study conducted in partnership with Acadia National Park, USGS has found high concentrations of mercury in tree swallows. Eggs from some of these birds had mercury concentrations that laboratory studies have shown are toxic to other bird ... [Read More]
