A decline in repeat visitors pushed the share of first-time visitors to 51.5 percent of the Japan market. Nearly all Japanese (95.9%) visit Oahu and for 73 percent Oahu is the only island visited. Mr. Schall asked if the growth in the Japan market is 4% in spending, how does HVCB plan to get there? Mr. Vericella talked about focusing primarily on the strengths of the Japan market such as the honeymoon/wedding market, elements of family market (higher spending), and the mature adults. He stated that continuity and buildup is keeping Hawaii strong and that according to DBEDT's numbers, there is a 4.4% increase in the beginning part of the year in Japanese spending expenditures. He said that destination campaigns will require more co-op for the industry to participate. Mr. Vericella stated that the more there is, the more effective the impact of the programs will be.
