Congressman DeFazio's Journal Early last summer the Commandant of the Coast Guard was testifying before the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation where I serve as the senior Democrat. After the hearing he asked me if I would like to accompany him on an inspection tour of the Polar Star icebreaker and base facilities in Antarctica. I jumped at the opportunity and accepted on the spot. ... My wife Myrnie was quite surprised about my eagerness to undertake this journey. She reminded me of my complaints about my 30+ round trip flights to Washington each year and my aversion to plane and helicopter travel in bad weather. The trip will require about 26 hours of flight time to McMurdo and another 2 hours to the Pole itself. Nonetheless, I look upon this trip as one of the most exciting experiences of my life. I will try and share information from the trip on a near realtime basis via the internet starting with our layover in New Zealand . ... [Read More]

Fire News1999 Oct. 5, 1999 - With the aid of a helicopter that dumped water on the blaze, Kaua'i firefighters contained a brush fire yesterday that charred parts of the top of Nounou Mountain Range also known as Sleeping Giant. After being informed of the fire around 2 p.m., firefighters from Kapa'a hiked a trail to the top of the ridge and created breaks around the blaze, which had scorched about 250 square feet on the ridgeline, according to the Kaua'i Fire Department. An A-2 helicopter arrived at the scene at 2:45 p.m., picked up water from a pond in Wailua and dumped water on the ridge to contain the fire. The fire was substantially extinguished before 5 p.m. yesterday. The fire posed no danger to any homes located in Wailua Homesteads or Wailua Houselots, two residential areas located at the base of the mountain range. The cause of the fire was under investigation. template1 Mar. 21, 2000 - Fanny Haung runs a small family farm in Waianae Valley Road. Wearing a large straw hat yesterday to protect herself from the sun, she tended here green onions as military helicopters flew overhead. The helicopters were carrying 2,000-gallon water buckets to fight the week-old brush fire that charred land within 100 yards of her farm over the weekend. "We were lucky," Haun said. "If the wind keeps blowing, the fire could still come up. It's not so bad during the day -- you can see the smoke from the fires and the helicopters. We worry at night, when you can see the fires burning and don't know what is going to happen." The farm is adjacent to Angel's junk yard, which has hundreds of cars stacked atop each other. If the fire reaches the junk yard, Haung said, it could cause a serious problem. Capt. Richard Soo, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department, said the fire has burned since Wednesday. After winds shifted Sunday, sparks reignited the blaze and burned another 5 ... [Read More]
National Park ServiceNatural Resource Year in Review2003 Another major emphasis for the Natural Sounds Program in 2003 was the initiation of air tour management planning. Under the National Parks Air Tour Management Act, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the lead agency for producing an air tour plan for each affected park. The National Park Service is a cooperating agency with joint signature authority for the plans. In early 2003, all existing and prospective air tour operators were required to apply in order to engage in this activity. Applications were received for more than 100 park units instead of the expected 55, requiring the preparation of plans for more than 100 parks over the next several years. ... [Read More]
