Wind Energy in Hawaii
Lalamilo Wind Farm is located in Waikoloa on the Island of Hawaii. It is owned by Hawaiian Electric Industries and originally had a total capacity of about 2.3 MW (many relatively small Jacobs turbines: twenty-six at 17.5 kW and fifty-five at 20 kW) when built in the 1980s. Maximum capacity now is about 1.5 MW. Currently, they are running about 60 turbines for a total of about 1.2 MW capacity. It's shown on the map as Hawaii island site 3 . Climate and Water Balance on the Island of Hawaii
On the geologically youthful island of Hawaii, soils are notgenerally well developed except for limited areas where ashdeposits occur in high-rainfall zones. Recent lava flowsexhibiting little or no soil development cover substantialportions of the island. The average depth to bedrock for 75different Hawaii island soil types and subtypes has beencalculated at 0.89 m with only moderate variation (Sato et al.,1973), lending quantitative credence to this stated geologicalyouthfulness of the island. Soil moisture storage capacity hasnot been well studied for most Hawaiian soil types. A value of125 mm/m is the average moisture capacity for ten different soiltypes for which data are available. If this is assumed to berepresentative, then the average soil moisture storage capacityfor all Hawaii island locations would be 111.2 mm (i.e., 0.89 x125). In the construction of water balance diagrams for allisland stations this value was rounded off to 100 mm so thatstandard moisture depletion tables ... [Read More]
