War in the Pacific NHP: Liberation - Guam Remembers
Mrs. Johnston was the wife of William G. Johnston, who was sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Japan in January 1942 alongwith about 500 other Americans living on the island at the time; she wasleft to alone care for their children. The tragic events of the timemade her a single parent, decades before the term was even in use. But the young woman also took on anotherresponsibility - as an island leader, as a patriot. As the occupation continued, Mrs. Johnston helpedraise the morale of Chamorros through her communication of the progressof the war. Much of the information was obtained by radios, kept hiddenfrom the Japanese military occupying forces. Messages were sometimespassed inside the wrappers around the bars of soap made by her family. The soap was given to Chamorros, sometimes under the very eyes ofJapanese guards. Among Lorraine's group was Maria Perez Howard, apretty woman who once worked as Dad's secretary. Her husband, Edward, was a crewman on the USS Penguin and was among the American prisonerstaken to Japan. Maria's good looks and her marriage to an American Navyman made her a favorite target for Japanese harassment. Just daysbefore the American landing, Maria was led into the jungle at gunpoint. She was never seen again. Once in a while, an American plane would fly over thecamp and stir up everyone's excitement. On one such occasion, mybrothers and sisters and I were splashing around with some otherchildren in a popular swimming hole not far from the camp. As wesplashed in the water, the American plane appeared overhead. It circleddirectly above us and came in closer. It flew so low that it barelycleared the treetops. Some of the children even claimed that they sawthe pilot's face. Before I could yell, "Wave and smile at him, or he'llshoot us," my companions were jumping up and down and che ... [Read More]

Appendix A: Statistical Summary
Children ever born . The average woman aged 15 to 44 in the United States in 1995 had anaverage of 1.2 children. Only in the CNMI was the average number of children less, and onlybecause of the very large number of single women in this category coming to Saipan to work inthe garment factories. (The rate in 1990 was 1.2, about the same as for the United States, butwould have been much higher if only local women were considered.) The rate for Guamremained high, partly because of the continued presence of military wives who traditionally havehigher fertility than civilians, and partly because of some traditionally Chamorros and some of thenewer immigrants with higher fertility. The Marshall Islands continued to have extremely highfertility, almost 3 children per woman. (This is a US Census Bureau measure of direct fertility, and should not be confused with the Total Fertility Rate.) The rates for the Federated States ofMicronesia remained extremely high, and the rates for the Virgin Islan ... [Read More]
