The majority of malaria cases diagnosed in the United States are imported, usually by persons who travel to countries where malaria is endemic ( 1 ). However, small outbreaks of locally acquired mosquito-transmitted malaria continue to occur ( 2 ). Despite certification of malaria eradication in the United States in 1970 ( 3,4 ), 11 outbreaks involving 20 cases of probable locally acquired mosquito-transmitted malaria have been reported to CDC since 1992 ( 5-- 7 ), including two reported in July 1996 from Palm Beach County, Florida (Palm Beach County Health Department, unpublished data, 1998). This report describes the investigation of seven cases of locally acquired Plasmodium vivax malaria that occurred in Palm Beach County during July--August 2003. Washington, D.C., March 3, 2005 — The Securities and Exchange Commission announced today that on March 2, 2005, it filed an emergency civil action to halt a massive fraud by a group of Palm Beach, Florida based hedge funds, their principals, their unregistered investment advisers, and an affiliated registered broker-dealer. The Economics of Northwest Florida’s Beach Habitat
Given the importance of tourism to our economy, and the value the beaches hold for visitors and citiz ens, maintenance of our beaches and dunes is imperative. The cost of beach restoration is high. In developed areas where dune systems have been damaged by construction practices, restoration and replanting of dunes costs between $1 million and $1.5 million dollars per mile. In less developed areas, such as along our national seashore, where dune systems have been left intact, costs of restoration and beach refurbishement are much less. This is due to the fact the beaches and dunes recede and move in their natural form, shifting and moving as nature intended. In developed areas, buildings have interferred with the natural movement of the seashore, forcing humans to take efforts to protect their buildings and investments.
