Creosote Waste in Ground Water, Pensacola, Florida ...

Wood preservatives ( creosote and pentachlorophenol) were discharged into two unlined pits near Pensacola, Florida, for more than 80 years. The contaminants seeped into an underlying sand and gravel aquifer and created an underground waste plume 1,000 feet long. This study is focused on the occurrence, transport, and degradation of organic contaminants associated with the wood preservatives. The study demonstrated the ability of naturally occurring microorganisms to degrade many of the organic contaminants to less toxic compounds. ... [Read More]

Contaminated ground water is migrating south toward Pensacola Bay from the former wastewater lagoons. Contaminated ground water is not discharging directly into Pensacola Bay, but discharges into the drainage ditch which empties into the Bay. Contamination of surface water in the Pensacola Yacht Club drainage ditch and Pensacola Bay; however, is minimal due to dilution and tidal mixing. The sediments in this drainage ditch and Pensacola Bay near the ditch outfall; however, are contaminated. This contamination is likely the result of past wastewater lagoon overflows and/or ground water discharge. ... [Read More]

TPC NHC OPAL 1995 PRELIMINARY REPORT
On 3 and 4 October, the hurricane turned toward the north-northeast to northeast and gradually accelerated. During thisperiod, the water temperature beneath the hurricane's circulationwas near 28 to 29C, and a large upper-level anticyclone was wellestablished over the Gulf of Mexico. Rapid intensificationoccurred not only as a result of these favorable environmentalconditions on the large scale but, and perhaps more importantly, due to significant changes on a smaller scale within thehurricane's inner core. Opal intensified into a category fourhurricane on the Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale early on 4 October at which time reconnaissance aircraft reported a small, 10 n midiameter eye. The minimum central pressure of 916 mb, with maximumsustained surface winds estimated at 130 knots ,occurred when the hurricane was centered about 250 n mi south-southwest of Pensacola,Florida near 1000 UTC 4 October. The peak intensity appears tohave occurred near the end of an eyewall contraction cyc ... [Read More]
