University of South Florida Receives RITA Grant for Transportation Education and Research The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) announced today that just over $1 million in grant money was awarded to the University of South Florida’s National Center for Transit Research, a DOT-funded University Transportation Center (UTC), to support the full range of the Center’s education and research programs. ... At the University of South Florida’s National Center for Transit Research, the principal focus is public transportation. Public transportation, broadly defined as alternatives to the single- occupant vehicle, includes modes such as carpool and vanpool, paratransit, bus, and guideway transit technologies. In addition, research activities focus on the interface of public transit with other transportation modes as well as the integration of public transit considerations within transportation and land use planning tools and procedures. The NHMFL at the University of Florida University of Florida in Gainesville The NHMFL's sister university at UF is home to user facilities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultra-low temperature, ultra-quiet environment for experimental studies in the High B/T (high magnetic field/low temperature) Facility. Facilities are also available for the fabrication and characterization of nanostructures at a new Nanofabrication Facility being operated in conjunction with UF's Major Analytical and Instrumentation Center. The MRI and spectroscopy capabilities of the NHMFL are located at UF in the Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy (AMRIS) facilities. AMRIS is part of the McKnight Brain Institute, and faculty from AMRIS, MBI, the UF Center for Structural Biology, and the College of Medicine maintain strong collaborative interactions. Cliff Stearns (R-6th) contacted Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and outlined the value of the Naval Air Depot in Jacksonville, and urged that it not be among the facilities to be closed or realigned. In his letter Stearns noted, "Getting our naval aviators, crews, and material skyward is critical, and NADEP Jacksonville is an exemplary depot in its efficiency, accuracy, and dedication to the mission and to our nation's security."
