USGS Statewide Observation Well Network in Pennsylvania
USGS Statewide Observation Well Network in Pennsylvania In 1931, as a result of interest in ground-water declines caused by the drought of 1930, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) established a statewide network of wells to monitor water-level fluctuations. Today, this network consists of 68 wells operated by USGS in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Watershed Conservation. The primary purpose of the observation-well network is to monitor ground-water conditions during droughts. Water-level data from the wells are one piece of information used by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Council when categorizing counties for a drought-watch, drought-warning, or drought-emergency declaration. Although the primary purpose of the network is for drought monitoring, long-term records of ground-water fluctuations at some wells also are useful for evaluating effects of development, changes in aquifer storage, and aquifer hydraulic properties. ...
