Visible Earth: MISR Views Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and the Appalachian Mountains
Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) images of Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and the Appalachian Mountains acquired on March 24, 2000 during Terra orbit 1417. The large image on the right was taken by the MISR camera viewing straight down (nadir). The series of smaller images, from top to bottom, respectively, were taken by cameras viewing 70.5 degrees forward, 45.6 degrees forward, 45.6 degrees aftward, and 70.5 degrees aftward of nadir. These images cover the environs of Newark, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, and Richmond. Differences in brightness, color, and contrast as a function of view angle are visible over both land and water. Scientists are using MISR data to monitor changes in clouds, Earth's surface, and pollution particles in the air, and to assess their impact on climate. North is toward the top. ... [Read More]

The Delaware River Basin
T he Delaware is the longest un-dammed river east of the Mississippi, extending 330 miles from the confluence of its East and West branches at Hancock, N.Y. to the mouth of the Delaware Bay. The river is fed by 216 tributaries, the largest being the Schuylkill and Lehigh Rivers in Pennsylvania. In all, the basin contains 13,539 square miles, draining parts of Pennsylvania (6,422 square miles or 50.3 percent of the basin's total land area); New Jersey (2,969 square miles, or 23.3%); New York (2,362 square miles, 18.5%); and Delaware (1,004 square miles, 7.9%). Included in the total area number is the 782 square-mile Delaware Bay, which lies roughly half in New Jersey and half in Delaware. ... [Read More]

Delaware
Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve was designated in June,1993. The main site sits along Delaware Bay, approximately six miles outside Dover; a smaller unit is located 24 miles north along Blackbird Creek. This reserve features a full range of tidal wetlands within a historic 18th century plantation setting. The reserve contains nearly 100 species of birds. Education services are being developed to link researchers with decision makers, and activities for all ages are being planned to enhance awareness of the importance of estuaries in Delaware Bay. Reserve facilities include a visitors center, fishing pier, 1300-foot boardwalk, two miles of trails, dock, and boat ramp For additional information on the Delaware Reserve, please visit: http://www.ocrm.nos.noaa.gov/nerr/reserves/nerrdelaware.html ... Horseshoe Crab Monitoring Web Site
While horseshoe crabs ( Limulus polyphemus ) are familiar to anyone who has spent some time on Atlantic coast beaches, they are, in fact, relicts of an ancient class of arthropods most members of which have been extinct for hundreds of millions of years. Besides being considered "living fossils," horseshoe crabs are of special interest because their eggs, billions of which are laid each spring on protected sandy shores like Delaware Bay, provide vital nourishment for hundreds of thousands of migrating shorebirds. The annual spectacle of horseshoe crab spawning and bird feeding, which peaks during the full and new moons of May and June, attracts bird watchers to Delaware Bay from far and wide. Red knot ( Calidris canutus ), sanderling ( Calidris alba ), ruddy turnstone ( Arenaria interpres ), and semipalmated sandpiper ( Calidris pusilla ) are just a few of the species that depend on the horseshoe crab eggs to sustain their long flights from South America to their breeding grounds in th ... Delaware Reserve
The St. Jones River watershed drains a portion of the coastal plain in central Kent County, Delaware, including the city of Dover, the surrounding suburbs, industrial areas, agricultural areas and Dover Air Force Base. The upper St. Jones is impounded by a dam 10.5 miles upstream from the bay to form Silver Lake, a municipal recreation area. Some other headwater streams are also impounded. Much of the eastern portion (bayward) of the watershed consists of wetlands and forests, including lands and waters managed for waterfowl, wild turkey, deer and other wildlife. ... [Read More]
