Each year, millions of American students and families finance the cost of a college education with the help of the federal student loan programs. A majority of students and schools depend on traditional, private sector-based lending through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program, while other schools participate in the government-run Direct Loan (DL) program, created under President Bill Clinton. Some proponents of the government-run program claim expansion of DL would "save" the government billions. Yet since the program's creation in the mid-1990s, the DL program has never lived up to its financial expectations, and more than 500 schools have voluntarily dropped out of the program. ...
