Connecticut Jobs
Exports, Jobs, and Foreign Investment: Connecticut Note: Export-related jobs estimates include only jobs supported by exports of manufactured goods; jobs generated by exports of services and jobs sustained by direct exports of products from other non-manufacturing sectors (e.g., mining and agriculture) are excluded. Consequently, the numbers understate the total employment impact of exports on the U.S. economy. ... Export-supported jobs account for an estimated 6.4 percent of Connecticut's total private-sector employment (one of every 15 jobs). Nearly one-fourth (24.0 percent) of all manufacturing workers in Connecticut depend on exports for their jobs. (2001 data are the latest available.) ... [Read More]
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR “The Insurance Commissioner and the Rell administration have a set a new low for what is acceptable in these multi billion dollar mergers and acquisitions. Connecticut jobs are apparently given little consideration when profitable Connecticut insurance companies are swallowed whole by their competitors. This decision by the Commissioner breaks the precedent set in previous mergers where commitments to Connecticut jobs were given serious consideration. It is particularly disturbing, that though most of these jobs were held by suburban residents neither the Governor’s office nor the Insurance Commissioner did any analysis of the economic damage to Connecticut families by the planned $11.5 billion acquisition. ... Congressman Christopher Shays The Department of Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) recently recommended closing Connecticut's New London Submarine base. Congressman Christopher Shays (R-Bridgeport) is working closely with Governor Rell, Congressman Simmons and the entire Connecticut Congressional Delegation to reverse this recommendation. On Wednesday, the BRAC Commissioners visited New London and met with the leaders. Shays made the case that the cleanup costs were underestimated and the ease to which the Kings Bay submarine base in Georgia would be able to absorb the operations was overestimated. "This base is valuable to our nation's military and Connecticut's economy," Shays said. "We're going to fight to convince the Commissioners that their initial recommendation was just plain wrong.
