Impact of a Smoking Ban on Restaurant and Bar Revenues --- El Paso, Texas, 2002
Smoke-free indoor air ordinances protect employees and customers from secondhand smoke exposure, which is associated with increased risks for heart disease and lung cancer in adults and respiratory disease in children ( 1,2 ). As of January 2004, five states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, and New York) and 72 municipalities in the United States had passed laws that prohibit smoking in almost all workplaces, restaurants, and bars ( 3 ). On January 2, 2002, El Paso, Texas (2000 population: 563,662), implemented an ordinance banning smoking in all public places and workplaces, including restaurants and bars. The El Paso smoking ban is the strongest smoke-free indoor air ordinance in Texas and includes stipulations for enforcement of the ban by firefighting and law enforcement agencies, with fines of up to $500 for ordinance violations ( 4 ). -In 1853, the New Haven Clock Company was incorporated as a supplier of brass clockmovements. This facility produced many types of clocks including pocket versions (started in1880), and wrist watches (started in 1917). This facility produced over 40 million watches between1880 and 1959. This complex consists of several buildings. The building occupants now include:Club International, Goodies Repairs, and St. John's Restaurant. Most of the total building spaceis unoccupied or abandoned. Club International is housed in the first two floors of the four storybuilding. Dominican and Colombian criminal groups dominate the wholesale-level distribution of South American heroin in Connecticut. Puerto Rican and other Hispanic criminal groups also distribute South American heroin at the wholesale level, albeit to a lesser extent. Dominican and Puerto Rican criminal groups are the primary retail-level distributors of South American heroin in the state. African American criminal groups as well as local street gangs, commonly known as crews, and local independent dealers of various ethnic backgrounds also distribute retail quantities of South American heroin in the state, although to a lesser extent. Retail-level heroin distribution usually occurs from private vehicles at public parking areas such as malls, restaurants, and shopping centers.
