Rebuild Colorado - Success Story - City of Durango and the Children's Museum of Durango and the City of Durango are embarking on a project to rehabilitate the historic 1893 Durango Powerhouse into a hands-on energy and science museum called the Durango Discovery Museum. This project will combine sustainable design principles with a historic building renovation, incorporate past, present, and future energy technologies, and rehabilitate a brownfield adjacent to the Animas River. Phased construction is expected to begin in July 2004, with an estimated opening date of Fall 2006. The project is expected to boost the economic vitality of the historic downtown retail area, stretching from 4th to 14th Street. While the south end (beginning at 4th Street) is a vibrant tourism center, the north end is a blighted area that has been designated an enterprise zone by the Colorado Department of Economic Development. Durango, Colorado (Umtra Site) The former Durango uranium processing site islocated just outside the city limits of Durango in southwest Colorado.The site is bordered on the east by the Animas River, on the northby Lightner Creek, and on the southwest by Smelter Mountain. Twotailings piles were located on the 59-hectare (147-acre) site.Prior to the cleanup, the two tailings piles contained approximately912,000 cubic meters (1.2 million cubic yards) of contaminatedmaterial and covered four hectares (ten acres) of the site. Multifamily Housing - Neighborhood Networks - Colorado Center Spreads the Wealth - HUD When the printers arrived--at no cost to the Durango Housing Neighborhood Networks Center, the Southern Ute Tribe donated a forklift and enlisted the help of tribal employees to unload the 26 pallets of printers into a temporary storage room donated by Ignacio Adult Learning Center. With assistance from a dozen nonprofit partners, Durango Housing Neighborhood Networks Center staff members distributed the printers to nonprofit groups, Title I schools, and churches.
