Cripple Creek Colorado

Colorado Governor James Peabody
With the support of the militia, the mine owners regained control over theCripple Creek mines. By midsummer, 1904, the strike was broken although it wasnever officially terminated by the Western Federation of Miners. The ownersreopened their mines with non-union labor and the union never again assumed itsprominance in Cripple Creek. By 1905, organized business had won an importantvictory against Colorado's union mine workers. ...

Both sides resorted to violence. The Cripple Creek mine operators importednon-union labor from outside the mining area which was countered by the unionforming armed camps to barricade the roads and railroads leading into thefields. The mine owners appealed to Governor Peabody, who sent an investigatorycommittee to the area. On their recommendation, Peabody dispatched the militia.Nearly 1,000 men were sent into Teller County on his order of September 4, 1903.Cripple Creek police and deputy sheriffs were relieved of their duties and allcitizens were required to register their firearms. ... ATSDR - PHA - Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining, Cripple Creek, Teller County, Colorado
The Cripple Creek mining district is on the western edge of Pikes Peak, about 100 miles south of Denver ( Appendix A ). Since gold was discovered in the district in 1890, this mining district has had over 500 mining and ore processing operations scattered over a 30 square mile area. Historically, the Cripple Creek mining district has produced more than 650 metric tons of gold, making it third largest gold producing district in the United States [2]. CC&V is currently the only mining operation in this district. The Cripple Creek mining district has been mined using underground mining techniques until the 1950s; mining activities in the district now use surface mining methods [2]. ... [Read More]

Air Discussion : The seventh sentence of the last full paragraph on page 5 notes thatseveral high PM10 readings were recorded in the town of Cripple Creek and provides additionalinformation on this matter in the first full paragraph on page 6 noting that the "cause(s) ofparticulate matter exceedances in the town of Cripple Creek in December 1995 throughFebruary 1996 are from excess road sanding during these months to control ice [10]. Theexceedances do not appear to be related to mining activities because of the distance between themine and Cripple Creek ( approximately 15 miles ) and the monitoring station located at the minedid not pick up high levels of PM10" (underline added by CC&V). This discussion is factuallyincorrect. CC&V's mining activities are not 15 miles from Cripple Creek. During the referencesperiod, CC&V's mining activities in the Main Cresson Mine and stored overburden material inthe Arequa Gulch overburden storage area and Ironclad/Globe Hill surface mi ... FEMA: Region VIII - Cripple Creek: Gold-Mining Town Hits Paydirt with FEMA Grant
Cripple Creek, the last of the great Colorado gold-mining strikes in the 1890s, retains many historic buildings from its mining heyday, and the entire town is within a National Historic Landmark District. The city has boomed again since 1991, when it became one of three towns in Colorado with legalized gambling. Under Chief Milositz, a retired Air Force firefighter, Cripple Creek Emergency Services has moved from an all-volunteer force to part volunteer and part professional. The organization includes firefighters, hazardous materials and search-and-rescue teams, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The unit has also rehabilitated its firestation--and is presumably the only firehouse in the nation with its own opera, since the historic opera house upstairs was included in the remodeling. The theater is now used for popular melodramas, which are occasionally interrupted by firetrucks roaring out from below. ... [Read More]
