Grand Canyon Visitor Information, Inner Canyon, Backcountry
Plan your hike so you are not hiking on the trail between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm . Almost all of the people who need emergency medical help in the canyon due to heat illness were people who were hiking between 10am and 4pm. You will overheat if you hike uphill in direct sunshine. You will use up a lot of your energy trying to stay cool. You will sweat out much more water and electrolytes hiking in the sunshine, and your risk of heat-related illness will increase dramatically. Take a break near shade and water between the hours of 10am until 4pm to avoid the worst heat of day. Enjoy a predawn start and a late afternoon finish. Experienced desert hikers know that the timing of their hike is the most important factor in avoiding hazards. Always bring a lightweight flashlight to give yourself the option of hiking out after dark in the event that illness, injury, or enjoyment should slow you down. ... [Read More]

When planning your trip, remember that the most enjoyable and safest seasons for hiking are spring and fall. It is desirable to schedule at least two nights in the canyon. This allows a rest and recovery day before the hike out and reduces the distance to be covered each day. You should consider elevation gain and loss, not just mileage, when researching possible itineraries. No trail is easy, and since most people live at elevations near sea level, they find that hiking at high elevations greatly contributes to their fatigue. ... [Read More]

The earlier you plan your hike and apply for permits, the more likely you will be to get the dates and itinerary of your choice. The earliest you can apply for a permit is the first of the month, four months prior to the proposed start month ( see table ). Each year Grand Canyon National Park receives approximately 30,000 requests for backcountry permits . The park issues 13,000 permits, and close to 40,000 people camp overnight in the backcountry at Grand Canyon. The majority of Grand Canyon hikers are here for the first time, and although many are avid hikers, they find that hiking the Grand Canyon is very different from most other backpacking experiences. They tend to react to the experience in one of two ways: either they can't wait to get back, or they swear they'll never do it again. Depending upon how prepared you are and what the canyon serves up at any particular time, your trip can be a vacation or a challenge, a revelation or an ordeal. (read hiking tips and summer hik ...
