Utah Division of Wildlife Resources The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) first began looking for Chronic Wasting Disease in 1998 under the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This effort was initiated in response to three young human individuals who had contracted Cruetzfeld-Jakob Disease (CJD). All three of the infected people had consumed wild game and one of the individuals was from Utah and had hunted and consumed wildlife from the state. Over 700 samples were obtained over a two-year period from hunter-harvested and symptomatic deer and elk from areas where this individual had hunted, none of which tested positive. Targeted surveillance continued between 1998 –2002 and no positives were found during this time period. ... [Read More]

Colorado Department of Personnel & Administration (DPA) Division of Information Technologies (DoIT) The Greenback Cutthroat Trout, Oncorhynchus clarki somias , was adopted as the official state fish on March 15, 1994, by an act of the General Assembly. The Rainbow Trout was considered the state fish from 1954 until 1994, however it was never officially adopted. The Greenback Cutthroat Trout was at one time indiginous to many small creeks, streams and rivers throughout most of Colorado. As mining and human occupation expanded across the state, the greenback easily succumbed to pollution from mine tailings in the state's streams and to competition from other species of trout introduced to Colorado waters. The demise was so complete that up until the late 1980's biologists feared the extinction of this native fish. However, researchers in the early 1990's discovered several small populations of the greenback in a few remote streams in Rocky Mountain National Park. Colorado Division of Wildlife and National Park personnel took immediate steps to protect and propogate the greenback. Pl ... [Read More]
