On April 17, 2002, Colorado Governor Bill Owens signed a bill passed by the General Assembly designating the Rhodochrosite as the new state mineral. While there was some debate as to whether the state mineral should be gold or silver or another mined mineral historically associated  with Colorado, it was decided that the deep red to rose pink manganeze carbonate (MnCO3) mineral, Rhodochrosite, is associated internationally with the state more than any other mineral. It is found in some gold and silver ore-bearing veins. The specimen at left is the world's largest Rhodochrosite crystal, called the Alma King, which is on display at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. It was found in the Sweet Home Mine near Alma (Park County), Colorado.   ... [Read More]

Gray and others, 1994b). Prior to mineralization, the volcanicdome rocks that host the deposit were intensely altered by highly acidicvolcanic gas condensates. Sulfide-rich mineral assemblages containingpyrite, enargite, chalcopyrite, and other minerals were subsequentlydeposited in the altered host rocks by hydrothermal fluids. Open-pitmining exposed large volumes of previously unoxidized sulfides toweathering. Acid-mine drainage with high concentrations of metals formsby the reactions of these previously unoxidized sulfides with oxygenatedgroundwaters. Further, the highly altered host rocks have very littlecapacity to react with and consume the acid generated by sulfideoxidation, thereby providing little or no mitigation of the aciddrainage. Evaporation further increases the concentrations of acid andmetals in waters draining mine dumps and open-pit waters. Soluble saltssuch as chalcanthite (a copper sulfate), jarosite (a potassium-ironsulfate), and halotrichite (an iron-aluminum su ... [Read More]

By 1903, the Western Federation of Miners was well entrenched in the miningareas and strove to extend its membership. At Cripple Creek in Teller County,Federation members held most of the political offices including sheriff. Mostnon-union miners had been driven out. The mine employers were intent, however,in their refusal to recognize the legitimacy of the union. Denying completelythe concept of collective bargaining, the mine owners insisted that theirworking relationships with the miners was based on individual contracts. For theunion, the ultimate weapon opposing this policy was the strike which wassupposed to force the owners into negotiation. The mine owners countered thestrikes by employing non-union workers. They believed that if union men lefttheir jobs then other workers would be glad to replace them, which would thenforce the union to disintegrate. ... [Read More]
