Colorado Governor William Lee Knous Although Knous was interested in studying engineering after high school, hisfamily instead persuaded him to study law and in the fall of 1908 he entered theUniversity of Colorado Law School. He graduated from college with honors at theage of twenty-two with his law degree. He then proceeded to practice law inOuray from 1911 to 1916. While he was practicing in Ouray, the metals marketsank to new lows and clients became infrequent. One year after he married MarieGrabow, they decided to move to Rochester, New York, where he joined a lawyer'sco-operative publishing company. He remained at this position for a little overa year before moving back to Colorado and joining a Montrose law firm. Utah History To Go - Chief Ouray Repercussions from this incident were devastating for the Indians. In 1880 Ouray traveled for the last time to Washington where he signed a treaty providing for the removal of the White River Utes as well as his own Uncompahgre band from Colorado to the Uintah and newly created Ouray reservations in Utah. Shortly after his return from Washington, Ouray died and was buried in southern Colorado.
