Big Lake is part of an extensive drainage/flood control project which extends well into the bootheel of Missouri. Water from approximately 2500 square miles of intensively farmed land enters the refuge through a number of large manmade ditches. Significant rainfall events cause the watershed watershed to reach the refuge within 24 hours. Unfortunately, this fast moving water carries excessive amounts of trash, debris, and while we now have facilities in place to prevent trash and debris from entering the refuge, we still receive enormous amount of silt every year contributing to the muddy conditions frequently found on Big Lake. Unfortunately, the majority of the silt does not leave the refuge, it merely settles out on the bottom, where it can be stirred up by wind action. The most significant aspect of this silt is a rapid filling of the lake which impairs the growth of aquatic vegetation needed for fish and wildlife resources. ... [Read More]

In 1996 during his first months in office, Huckabee led the fight for Amendment 75 to the Arkansas Constitution. The amendment created a sales tax of one-eighth of a cent that benefits the state Department of Parks and Tourism, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the Department of Arkansas Heritage and the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission. Proceeds from the amendment have allowed Arkansas to build the finest system of state parks in the country along with a system of state-of-the-art nature centers operated by the Game and Fish Commission. The first of those nature centers at Pine Bluff was named after the governor in recognition of his conservation efforts. Bats may be the most misunderstood animals in the United States, although as consumers of enormous numbers of insects, they rank among the most beneficial. Almost all United States bats, and 70 percent of the bat species worldwide, feed almost exclusively on insects and are thus extremely beneficial. In fact, bats are the only major predators of night-flying insects. One bat can eat between 600 and 1,000 mosquitoes and other insect pests in just one hour (Organization for Bat Conservation) . While most United States bat species are insectivorous, bats in other parts of the world feed on a variety of items in addition to insects.
