Columbia County was formed December 1852, from parts of Lafayette, Hempstead, Union, and Ouachita counties.   Due in large part to this collaboration, Southern states are leading the effort. Currently, of the states in which NLR connections exist, six are located in the South. In the Southern region, the high-speed corridor has been connected from Washington, D.C. through Raleigh-Durham (Duke University), through Atlanta (Georgia Tech), and then on to Jacksonville, Florida. SURA has deployed AT&T fiber for use along the I-10 corridor from Jacksonville to Houston, assisting the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) to establish an NLR node in Baton Rouge (Louisiana State University).
