Independence County was created in October 1820 from part of Lawrence County. Its name comes from the Declaration of Independence. The landscape of the county is rolling hills, foothills of the Ozarks, except for river delta farmland in the southeast section. The county seat is Batesville. Agriculture is the economic base of the county, primarily is cattle and poultry production and processing. Some manufacturing is located near Batesville. The scenic White River coming into Batesville has the typical Ozark bends, riffles, shoals and pools surrounded by forest, rock, and hillsides. It is famous for its excellent trout fishing. When it leaves Batesville, it becomes mostly a flatland river. The river brought settlers to the county in the early 1800's. The Pioneer Cemetery is the oldest recognized and preserved cemetery in Arkansas. Greg and Bryson Wood, two brothers from Independence County, became interested in purchasing a convenience store in Batesville that had been closed by the previous owner. To determine if the location was the primary factor in the failure of the previous business, Greg and Wood worked closely with the ASU Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Jonesboro to do a feasibility and market analysis and to prepare a formal business plan. Arkansas State Capitol Virtual Tour
The historic Arkansas State Capitol serves as the seat of our government. Construction took 16 years -- from 1899-1915. The Capitol was built on the site of the state penitentiary and prisoners helped construct the building. They lived in a dormitory that was left on the Capitol grounds while construction was taking place. The exterior of the Capitol is limestone, which was quarried in Batesville, Arkansas. Total construction cost was $2.2 million and today’s value of the building is $320 million. The front entrance doors are made of bronze.
