Ash Avenue Bridge - Tempe, Arizona
In1909, the State of Arizona began to develop a north-south highway system and the need fora bridge at the Salt River became apparent. That year, the Territorial Legislatureappropriated funds for the construction of a highway bridge at Tempe. Preliminary workbegan in the spring of 1911 on an alignment approximately 500 feet east of the 1905Arizona Eastern Railroad Bridge. When construction began in 1911, labor was provided byprisoners from the Arizona Territorial Prison at Florence. Although convict labor had beenused on earlier projects, this bridge is one of the last remaining examples ofconstruction accomplished under that system. Although Roosevelt Dam was completed in 1911,flooding of the Salt River was still a fairly common experience, and periodic repairs(1916, 1920,and 1925) were necessary to maintain safe conditions on the bridge. By thelate 1920s, automobiles became wider, heavier, and more numerous, stressing the structurebeyond its design limits. In 1928 the Arizona Highw ... [Read More]

Off-Highway Vehicles
The purpose of the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Off-Highway Vehicle Program is to promote safe, responsible, and ethical off-highway vehicle use while emphasizing protection of environmental resources. ...

Off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation use on public lands has increased significantly. Since 1977, the increased use of OHVs has out-paced Arizona's population growth. OHV use has more than doubled, while the population has increased by slightly more than 65 percent. A study completed in 1990 estimated the number of OHVs (4X4's, Buggies/Sandrails, ATV's, Motorcycles, and Snowmobiles) in Arizona, to be over 550,000. In 2001 the number of ATVs alone was over 100,000. Twenty percent of adult Arizonans identify themselves as motorized trail users. The use of off-highway vehicles is a legitimate source of recreation, however it is also necessary to recognize and minimize OHV impacts to wildlife resources and habitat. ... [Read More]

Bill Williams NWR
The delta area, including much of the cattail marsh, can be viewed from several turnouts off Arizona Highway 95. The riparian area along Bill Williams River is best seen by driving the road that begins approximately .3 of a mile south of the river bridge and ends approximately 3 miles east of the highway. Most of the road was washed out by flooding in 1993, but driving is still possible for approximately 3 miles from Highway 95. Visitors are welcome to explore the rest of the refuge on foot.  A 1/4-mile long, informative nature trail is open during office hours. ... [Read More]
