Cassini-Huygens: Multimedia-Images
Initially thought to be rocks or ice blocks, they are more pebble-sized. The two rock-like objects just below the middle of the image are about 15 centimeters (about 6 inches) (left) and 4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches) (center) across respectively, at a distance of about 85 centimeters (about 33 inches) from Huygens. The surface is darker than originally expected, consisting of a mixture of water and hydrocarbon ice. There is also evidence of erosion at the base of these objects, indicating possible fluvial activity. The image was taken with the Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer, one of two NASA instruments on the probe. ... [Read More]

Paradoxically, Chaco Canyon is set in desertscrub-grassland in the middleof the San Juan Basin and at least 75 km removed from the nearest potentialtimber sources ( Fig. 2 ). The packrat midden record indicatesthat highland conifers were either absent locally, as in the case of spruce andfir, or too rare, as in the case of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine, to haveprovisioned the Anasazi (prehistoric Puebloans) builders of the Chacoangreat houses. Most of this wood had to be felled, processed, harvestedand hauled from one or more distant highland areas. The distances anddirections of sources for timber procurement are one measure of economic, political and social relationships across the San Juan Basin. Locationof the source stands can be narrowed somewhat by species (i.e., spruceand fir grow only on some mountaintops), but more specific locationsrequire application of geochemical tracers. ...
