Oil droplets bubble to the surface of Pearl Harbor above the USS Arizona, creating a vivid link to the past. On a quiet Sunday morning December 7, 1941 a Japanese surprise air attack left the Pacific Fleet in smoldering heaps of broken, twisted steel. Here, peace was interrupted and paradise lost. In hours, 2,390 futures were stolen, half of these casualties from the battleship Arizona. ... [Read More]

Remembering Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial
T oday the battle-scarred, submerged remains of the battleship USS Arizona rest on the silt of Pearl Harbor, just as they settled on December 7, 1941. The ship was one of many casualties from the deadly attack by the Japanese on a quiet Sunday that President Franklin Roosevelt called "a date which will live in infamy." The Arizona 's burning bridge and listing mast and superstructure were photographed in the aftermath of the Japanese attack, and news of her sinking was emblazoned on the front page of newspapers across the land. The photograph symbolized the destruction of the United States Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and the start of a war that was to take many thousands of American lives. Indelibly impressed into the national memory, the image could be recalled by most Americans when they heard the battle cry, "Remember Pearl Harbor." More than a million people visit the USS Arizona Memorial each year. They file quietly through the building and toss flower wr ... [Read More]

USS Arizona Memorial
In addition to the public bus system, private companies operate shuttle buses to the memorial from Waikiki hotels several times a day for about $3.00 one-way. Many tour companies offer package tours including the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri Battleship and other sites. Access is the main issue for the USS Missouri site at Ford Island. Currently, only active military ships are allowed in Pearl Harbor, and only active military personnel or those with DOD passes are allowed on the Naval Base and Ford Island. The one exception is visitors to the USS Missouri Battleship, which is moored to Navy property. By agreement with the Navy, visitors to the battleship are allowed provided they arrive in groups and do not travel individually. This agreement is implemented by the trolley shuttle bus system that transports visitors from the USS Bowfin Museum and Park to the USS Missouri. A few tour bus operators have also been given clearance to the USS Missouri. This tour bus traffic amounts ... [Read More]
