CIA - The World Factbook -- Samoa
The economy of Samoa has traditionally been dependent on development aid, family remittances from overseas, agriculture, and fishing. The country is vulnerable to devastating storms. Agriculture employs two-thirds of the labor force, and furnishes 90% of exports, featuring coconut cream, coconut oil, and copra. The manufacturing sector mainly processes agricultural products. The decline of fish stocks in the area is a continuing problem. Tourism is an expanding sector, accounting for 25% of GDP; about 88,000 tourists visited the islands in 2001. One factory in the Foreign Trade Zone employs 3,000 people to make automobile electrical harnesses for an assembly plant in Australia. The Samoan Government has called for deregulation of the financial sector, encouragement of investment, and continued fiscal discipline, meantime protecting the environment. Observers point to the flexibility of the labor market as a basic strength for future economic advances. Foreign reserves are in a relativ ... [Read More]

This treaty went into effect on February 16, 1900. On April 17, 1900, the matai (chiefs) of Tutuila formally ceded the islands of Tutuila and Aunu'u to the United States. On July 16, 1904, the king and matai of Manu'a ceded the islands of Ta'u, Ofu, Olosega, and Rose Atoll to the United States. Congress formally ratified the 1900 and 1904 deeds of cession retroactively in 1929. Swains Island became part of American Samoa by joint resolution of Congress in 1925. ... [Read More]

Census 2000 Glossary of Basic Geographic and Related Terms
city - A type of incorporated place in all states and the District of Columbia. In agreement with the state of Hawaii, the U.S. Census Bureau does not recognize the city of Honolulu for presentation of census data. In Virginia, all cities are not part of any county, and so the Census Bureau treats them as equivalent to a county for data presentation purposes, as well as treating them as places; there also is one such independent city in each of three states: Maryland, Missouri, and Nevada. In 23 states and the District of Columbia, some or all cities are not part of any minor civil division, in which case the Census Bureau treats themas county subdivisions as well as places for data presentation purposes. ...
