U.S. Scholars Detained in China But I hope you will take one specific idea that has been recommended, and take it under active advisement to the President, and that would be to invite the families to the White House to meet with our distinguished President. The message has to be sent at the highest possible level that we mean business. Each and every one of those lives is precious to the White House, it is precious to the Congress, and it is precious to the American people. Even if just one person had been unjustly incarcerated and held hostage, we would need to speak out for that individual. In this case we have several, and they are American citizens to boot. And we must do the very maximum on behalf of any American who is being held by a dictatorship. ... [Read More]
US Dept of State Indeed, I think U.S.-Latin American relations may be entering a much more complex and problematical phase than we have seen in the last several years. Despite the rhetoric of free trade, hemispheric partnerships, and inter-American cooperation, there is a danger in this country of reverting in practice to protectionist commercial practices, to restrictionist immigration policies, to punitive approaches to the narcotics issue, to unilateral instincts on issues ranging from Cuba to narcotics and immigration. And I think such trends may very well pose significant problems and tensions in inter-American relations. ... [Read More]

NMS - Marine Sanctuaries -Fagatele Bay The Sanctuary's primary partnership is with the American Samoa Government, their Department of Commerce, which houses the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Samoa. The Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary is an integral part of the local DOC, sitting in the Resource Management Division. This partnership gives us standing in the local government that we could not have as an independent entity, largely due to our small size. We are partners with DMWR and NMFS as mentioned above. We partner with three other agencies to run an annual children's environmental summer camp. We collaborate with DMWR for many of our research projects and assist them in some of theirs. DMWR has provided us office space, boat time and equipment over the 11 years we have operated in Samoa. We have had cooperative projects with the National Park of American Samoa and their visitors' center contains a Sanctuary exhibit. We are planning a joint office/visitors' center with the National Park to be built in t ... [Read More]
CIA - The World Factbook -- Bhutan The economy, one of the world's smallest and least developed, is based on agriculture and forestry, which provide the main livelihood for more than 90% of the population. Agriculture consists largely of subsistence farming and animal husbandry. Rugged mountains dominate the terrain and make the building of roads and other infrastructure difficult and expensive. The economy is closely aligned with India's through strong trade and monetary links and dependence on India's financial assistance. The industrial sector is technologically backward, with most production of the cottage industry type. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian migrant labor. Bhutan's hydropower potential and its attraction for tourists are key resources. Model education, social, and environment programs are underway with support from multilateral development organizations. Each economic program takes into account the government's desire to protect the country's environment and cultural ... [Read More]

Pacific Island Nations: Current Issues and U.S. Interests The six US dollar economies (Guam, CNMI, Palau, FSM, RMI and American Samoa in the South Pacific) have a combined population of just under half a million (less than seven percent of the region's total), occupy just about one half of one percent of the land area and generate 23 percent of the region's total GDP. Guam, CNMI, Palau and American Samoa (where two fish canneries are the largest employers) have higher living standards than the non-dollar economies in the rest of the Pacific, except the French territories, and higher living standards than the developing world as a whole. This is the result of direct American involvement and links to US markets. All of these are safe markets because American involvement will continue. ... [Read More]
Teacher Curriculum: Background In 1972, as Americans became more aware of the intrinsic ecological and cultural value of our coastal waters, Congress passed the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act. This law authorizes the Secretary of Commerce to designate our most cherished marine waters as national marine sanctuaries, in order to protect and manage their priceless resources. In the years since that time, 13 national marine sanctuaries have been created. They include nearshore coral reefs and open oceans, rich banks and submarine canyons, intertidal areas, and sheltered bays. National marine sanctuaries range in size from less than a neighborhood (Fagatele Bay, American Samoa--0.6 square kilometers or 0.25 square miles) to larger than the state of Connecticut (Monterey Bay--13,800 square kilometers or 5,328 square miles). ... HYPERSEED MAC: An airborne observing campaign to study hypervelocity reentries of sample return capsules and deposition of organics in large meteors We've done several productions for FEMA, which we shot on location in Northern California, Pasadena, Kentucky, and American Samoa. We've also done some image analysis work for a few local police departments. ... Last year, we worked with the Air Force to produce a live video Webcast from an aircraft flying over the Mediterranean. In that case, we were simply showing feeds from cameras observing the Leonid meteors at high altitude and the researchers who were working at their instruments on board the plane. Even though it wasn't a particularly fast-frame rate, the simple fact that it was coming from an airplane halfway around the world was a real attraction. ... [Read More]
U.S.-Russian Relations: An Assessment Russia's armed forces, first and foremost, are not happy about NATO troops in Central Asia. The recent American deployment of troops in Kyrgyzstan after the war in Afghanistan was over is especially puzzling and alarming for this Russian constituency since they do not understand the American mission there and the Bush administration ahs not explained the mission. Uzbek President Islam Karimov has hinted that he would like to see the American armed forces stay in Uzbekistan for an indefinite period of time to help protect Uzbekistan from terrorists, and though never stated publicly, the Russians. American troops have demonstrated a pattern of staying in places well after the fighting has ended. Moreover, the recent increases in U.S. aid to the Uzbek dictatorship are cited in Russia as additional evidence of the United States' long-term military intentions in the region. Some Russian military officers as well and defense policy elites have hinted at the possible b ... [Read More]
