Alaska Marine Highway Wildlife Viewing Guide, Alaska Department of Fish and Game
Viewing Information: Reservations are mandatory for staterooms and private vehicles. Passengers may bring bicycles and kayaks for a nominal fee. Many people sleep on deck or in the warm inside lounges. All vessels offer some sort of food service and shower facilities. The ferry system sponsors natural history lectures, movies, performances by musicians, demonstrations from visual artists, and other activities for passengers, particulary during the summer. ...

Description: Travel the Last Frontier on the “poor man's cruise line.” This relatively inexpensive year-round state ferry system connects dozens of Alaska communities in Southeast, Southcentral, and Southwest Alaska. From the decks of large, comfortable ships, visitors observe humpback , gray , and orca whales, Dall and harbor porpoises, sea otters , and Steller sea lions . Harbor seals and cormorants lounge atop the navigation buoys along the route. Use binoculars to see shore-based wildlife: mountain goats , black and brown bears, and Sitka black-tailed deer . Look for bald eagles and gulls overhead, and sea birds, including pigeon guillemots, buffleheads, scoters, harlequin ducks , gulls, and goldeneyes, below. The ship's crew frequently alerts passengers to wildlife viewing opportunities. ... [Read More]

Southeast Alaska Transportation Plan (SATP)
The recommendations of the SATP are general. Uncertainties remain, such as the outcome of the necessary environmental and preliminary engineering studies. The performance of the new fast ferry, the M/V Fairweather, is being evaluated to determine whether the state would purchase additional fast ferries or pursue different ferry technology to replace an aging fleet. Should the state decide not to purchase additional ferries of the Fairweather class, existing ferries would be maintained, until replaced with more conventional vessels and road segments. Although the SATP proposes that specific road routes be developed and specific types of ferries be acquired, this approach does not preclude substitution of a different road route or vessel if subsequent information directs the state to a better transportation alternative to accomplish the same objective. ...
