NOAA Ocean Explorer: Gulf of Alaska 2004 Since receiving his PhD in zoology and physiology from Louisiana State University in 1982, Dr. Tom Shirley has been conducting research and teaching graduate courses in marine biology at the Juneau Center, School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, University of Alaska, Fairbanks. He has been the Principle Investigator on 10 manned submersible research projects, has participated in more than 40 research cruises, and has extensive scuba and submersible experience. Dr. Shirley has more than 100 scientific publications, and 19 graduate students have received their degrees with him as their advisor. Dr. Shirley has described new species of invertebrates from three different phyla from around the world, including the Arctic, Antarctic, Gulf of Mexico, Mediterranean, Philippines, and Alaska. Alaska Predator Ecosystem Experiment (APEX) Alaska Predator Ecosystem Experiment (APEX) is an interdisciplinary and interagency effort of biologists, ecologists, oceanographers, and statisticians from federal, state, private, and university entities. APEX will test the general hypothesis that low food abundance contributes to the decline of seabird and marine mammal populations in Prince William Sound. APEX researchers are sampling the stomach contents of for age fish to see if they are being affected by a lack of food. NOAA Ocean Explorer: Exploring Alaska's Seamounts Zachary Hoyt is currently a graduate student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks at the Juneau Center of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. His masters project, which is nearing completion, was a submersible project observing and documenting habitat and movement of the deep living king crab, Lithodes aequispinus, in Southeast Alaska. Zac received his Bachelors of Science from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and attended Hawaii Pacific University to escape the cold and dark of Alaskas interior during his junior year. During his graduate studies he has ventured away to study at the Friday Harbor Marine Lab on San Juan Island, WA. He is an avid climber with several successful climbs in the Alaska Range, Tetons and volcanoes of Mexico. He is an active SCUBA diver and lives on a sailboat in Auke Bay, AK. University of Alaska Awarded $19 Million, August 16, 2004 Press Release - National Institutes of Health (NIH) NIH also is announcing today the award of $1.75 million for the fourth year of an IDeA grant called a Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). (The total funding for the 5-year award, which began in 2001, is $10.86 million.) Under the COBRE grant, the university is developing a multidisciplinary Center for Alaska Native Health Research, which focuses on genetic, dietary, and cultural-behavioral studies related to weight, nutrition, and health of specific Alaska Native villages.
