Kenai National Wildlife Refuge
The estimated number of visitors to the Kenai NWR is 400,000 people per year. Major activities on the refuge include fishing, hiking, camping, and canoeing. Fishing is the most popular activity on the refuge. Weekend visitation during the peak fishing season often results in extremely limited parking and few, if any, available campsites. The refuge is also one of southern Alaska’s most popular destinations for Anchorage residents. Most non-local visitors to the refuge spend one to two weeks at the refuge, though some visitors with motor homes stay up to six weeks. Since the refuge’s creation in 1941 visitation has doubled three times and visitation continues to increase as opportunities for more refuge activities increase. Although the majority of the annual visitation is concentrated in the short summer season, with a peak in July, there are opportunities for winter recreation such as cross-country skiing and snow machine use. The Kenai NWR is home to one of the most active salmon fis ... [Read More]

Becoming an Outdoors Woman
Why do fewer women than men participate in outdoor activities like fishing, hunting, shooting and backpacking? ...

During each instructional period, there will be 6-12 courses offered. The participant registers for one choice in each time period. In each session, there will be choices that focus on each of three areas: shooting and hunting, fishing, and non-harvest activities. These might include canoeing and kayaking, camping, outdoor cooking, orienteering or survival. The teaching is focused on the needs of adult learners, with the classes being taught in a very “hands-on” way. ... [Read More]

Big Game Hunting in Alaska, Alaska Department of Fish and Game
For a truly unique hunt, you may want to consider using a combination of transportation methods to get away from other hunters. A great combination is to fly into a river, float the river in an inflatable raft and then get picked up at a predetermined haulout point downstream. I've even flown into large lakes with a raft and small motor and hunted the shores for moose and brown bears. One advantage is the great fishing available in waters seldom visited by fishermen. Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge - Recreation and Education
As is the case with hunting, angling opportunites--for both subsistance and sport fishers--are available across the refuge, and some of the fishing is every bit as spectacular as it is difficult to access. Charters out of Homer, Seward, Sitka, Kodiak and Unalaska fish the salt waters off refuge lands. Unalaska, for example, is considered by many to offer the best chance anywhere to hook into a "barn door" trophy halibut. ...

Alaska Maritime (and particularly its Aleutian lands) has become a coveted vacation destination for serious birders, because even the most jaded of enthusiasts is likely to be able to add a species to his or her "life list" here. Though much of Alaska Maritime is extremely remote, some of its bird colonies are regularly visited by commercial sightseeing boats operating out of Seward, Sitka and Homer. Charters can also be arranged out of other coastal communities located near refuge lands, including Kodiak, Nome, Unalaska, St. Paul and Sand Point. Summer, when birds are nesting and sea lions and seals are pupping on the beaches, is the best time to visit; though cool temperatures, high winds and precipitation can be expected on most refuge lands even then. ...
