Lisa Murkowski - U.S. Senator, Alaska :: Senator Murkowski's Accomplishments
State Pioneer Home Assistance: The Senator in January 2004 in the final Consolidated Appropriations Act for FY '04, won state federal reimbursement/per diem funds to help defray the cost of care for Alaska veterans who live in the state's six Alaska Pioneers Homes. The per diem payments mean that for the first time the state will receive the same level of aid for the care of Alaska's veterans living in the Pioneers Homes that goes to 48 other states who have already built stand-alone veterans home facilities. Murkowski said the change should provide the state with about $1.5 million a year in aid, up to $55 a day for each of the nearly 100 veterans currently living in the state's Pioneers Homes (depending on the level of care they need). The bill passed the Senate on Jan. 22, 2004 and was signed by the President on Jan. 23,2004 (PL. 108-199) . War Dogs Memorial, Veterans Museum Assistance: On December 16, 2003 the Senator was in Alaska where she attended ceremonies where money was ... [Read More]

Hawaii Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary: Special Offerings

The picture below shows where we'll be surveying. ...

We enjoyed our short stay in Kodiak. It is such a beautiful place. I've heard it referred to many times in the last week as the "Northern-most Hawaiian Island", and certainly along some of the coastlines, and especially thru the valleys that look towards the coast, it appears very similar to Kaua`i or Moloka`i (although not quite as steep). I heard the nickname so frequently that I even mustered the gall to present my i.d. and ask for a Kama'aina discount in one of the local sporting goods stores! It worked…the clerk offered me a 2 for 1 discount on a couple of shirts that I bought even though I didn't have the coupon! ... [Read More]
