Ecosystem and Climate History of Alaska
This project involves reconstruction of the late Pleistocene and Holocene history of environmental change in Alaska, focusing upon the past 50,000 years. High latitude ecosystems are highly sensitive to climatic change. Understanding the history of environmental responses to past climate changes provides a basis for forecasting future responses to a variety of possible climatic scenarios. Information derived from this study has applications to ecology, paleoecology, paleoclimatology, archeology, vertebrate paleontology, and other fields. The largest magnitude earthquakein the central interiorof Alaska since October 1947 occurredon October 29, 1968.Rated magnitude 6.5, the shockcentered southeast of the villageof Rampart, on the Yukon River.This area was badly shaken, butno damage was sustained, sincemost buildings at Rampart were oflog construction. Most residentswere frightened from buildings,goods toppled from shelves, andequipment not bolted down shifted.Greatest evidence of the shakingwas in the Hunter Creek areanear Rampart. Many landslidesoccurred, most on south-facingslopes. Lake ice cracks wereextensive in some areas and wereobserved some 50 miles from theepicenter in the Minto Lakes area.Ground cracks were noted atNenana, about 50 miles southeastof Rampart, and plaster crackedand fell.
