ATSDR Web News - Childhood Blood Lead Screening Final Report - Anniston, Alabama
Over 350 of the children screened currently reside in the city of Anniston. The remaining children live in communities surrounding Anniston. Fifty-eight households had more than one child screened, including 11 sets of twins and one set of triplets. ...

Results of this project do not provide a complete picture of blood lead levels in Anniston. Less than 1% of the children screened by ATSDR had a blood lead level higher than the CDC guidelines of 10.0 micrograms per deciliter However, approximately 25% of the children had a blood lead level 5.0 micrograms per deciliter These findings provide evidence that children are being exposed to lead. Although risks at these low levels are unclear, this evidence points to the need for continued screening and education for exposure prevention. ATSDR will continue to work with state and federal agencies, as well as the community, to implement recommendations for increased screening and awareness in Anniston. ... [Read More]

Many people in Calhoun County, including residents of Anniston, Coldwater, and parts ofOxford, receive their water from the Anniston Water Works, as do the Army depots at ANADand Fort McClellan. (In addition, Anniston uses the Earl C. Knowlton Treatment Plant for stand-by services. This plant draws its water from Hillabee Lake [ Ware, 1998 ].) The water works drawsits water solely from the artesian Coldwater Spring, a groundwater source located between 1 and2 miles south of ANAD. About 58,000 people (roughly 50% of the Calhoun County community)are served by the Anniston Water Works; other Calhoun County residents are served by foursmaller public water supply systems (i.e., Oxford Water System and Sewer Board, Calhoun WaterSystem, Jacksonville Treatment Facility, and Weaver City Water Supply) or by private wells. Thefour smaller public water supplies also obtain water from groundwater sources. Some privatewells exist in the area surrounding ANAD, although the exact number of wells is no ... [Read More]

ATSDR - Health Consultation - Evaluation of Soil, Blood & Air Data from Anniston, Alabama - Public Comment Release
Statementsmade by community members during public meetings in Anniston, and in letters and documentsprovided by Solutia suggested that other sources for PCBs are possible in addition to the Solutiafacility. It has not been established that offsite PCB contamination is solely the result of air orsurface water transport from PCB wastes generated by Solutia. ATSDR is not aware of additionalinvestigations that identify other sources of PCB contamination. The additional sourcessuggested for PCB contamination in Anniston include foundry sand from metal casting operations and transformers and capacitors at an electric power substation. ... [Read More]

ATSDR - Health Consultation - Anniston Lead Site, Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama
The 467 children resided in various parts of Anniston, as did the 47 children with elevated BLLs. There wasno geographic clustering of elevated BLLs in the area of Anniston where lead had been found in surface soil. None of the 47 children lived at addresses where surface soil lead levels were greater than 400 ppm;therefore, BLLs could not be related to living at residences where surface soil lead levels were known forthese persons. As a follow up activity, ADPH and CCHD offered blood lead screening for residents andfrequent visitors at those residences. ... [Read More]

Response : Yes. ANAD has sponsored several community activities to better inform thepublic about environmental conditions at ANAD and the progress of any clean upactivities. Many of these activities are required by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency's Superfund regulation. To assist in community relation activities, ANAD hasdeveloped a community relation plan that details community concerns (gathered frominterviews), develops a process to further understand the needs of the public, and presentsa plan to keep community members informed about actions at the site. Approximately 95% of the residents of Calhoun County receive their drinking water from one offive public water supplies, such as the Anniston Water Works ( Haskew, 1996 ). Table 5 providesinformation on the public water supplies in Calhoun County. Since 1981, TCE at concentrations(up to 3.52 ppb) slightly above the CREG of 3 ppb, but below the MCL of 5 ppb, has beenconsistently measured in the only active spring (Coldwater Spring) serving the Anniston WaterWorks. The Safe Drinking Water Act requires public suppliers to test their water regularly forcontaminants, including TCE. Each of the five Calhoun County public water suppliers tests forTCE in their production wells or springs either on a quarterly or annual basis. (Those wells orsprings exceeding the analytical detection limit for TCE are sampled on a quarterly basis.) Inrecent sampling of the public water supplies, no TCE was detected at concentrations above theMCL. Should a contaminant be detected above its MCL, the supplier is ... [Read More]
