Library: The Drama Within
Ms. Griliches first learned about the possibility of collaboratingwith the Library on this book from Jeanne Guillemin, a former member ofthe Board of Trustees of the Library's American Folklife Center and a professorof sociology at Boston College. The photos were previously exhibited atthe Widener Library at Harvard University in 1993 and at the Boston PublicLibrary in 1993 and 1996. In 1993 Ms. Griliches wrote to Carl Fleischhauer,who was then serving as the Folklife Center's coordinator of media documentation,to gauge the Library's interest in publishing or exhibiting her work. In 1935 a venture was initiated to meet the need of blind adults who could not afford to purchase talking-book machines and to provide employment to those receiving financial assistance from the government as a result of the Great Depression. President Roosevelt allotted $211,500 to the Works Progress Administration ( WPA ) for the construction of 5,000 talking-book machines "for the purpose of enabling the blind to use the books now provided by the Library of Congress" (letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, September 19, 1935). Both an electric and a spring-driven (hand-cranked) machine were produced. The machines remained the property of the Library of Congress. The President's instructions stated that the machines were "to be loaned by the Librarian of Congress to such libraries as he may judge appropriate to serve as local or regional centers for the use of such book machines under such conditions and regulations as he may prescribe, for the purpose of enabling the blind to use ...
