The best U.S. export opportunities remain in the traditional areas of foodstuffs and manufactured goods: vehicles and automobile parts; hotel, restaurant, and medical supplies; and computers and electronics. Bahamian tastes in consumer products roughly parallel those in the United States. With approximately 85% of the population of primarily African descent, there is a large and growing market in the Bahamas for "ethnic" personal care products. Merchants in southern Florida have found it profitable to advertise in Bahamian publications. Most imports in this sector are subject to high but nondiscriminatory tariffs. ... [Read More]

In 2003, suspected ‘Asbat al-Ansar elements were responsible for the attempt in April to use a car bomb against a McDonald’s in a Beirut suburb. Michael Barone and Victor Hanson, "The Immigration Debate" , eJournal USA: Society & Values, December 2004

And I think the evidence for that is pretty strong. The workings of the economic marketplace are such that if we suddenly could expel all illegal immigrants from the United States overnight, there would be large parts of our economy that simply wouldn't work. You wouldn't be able to get a clean dish in a restaurant in Los Angeles and things of that nature. So what President Bush's proposal attempts to do is to provide a guest worker program to match willing workers with willing employers to provide some legal status to immigrants in this country. ... Appendix A -- Chronology of Significant Terrorist Incidents, 2003

In Casablanca, one of five near-simultaneous bombs exploded in the street outside the Belgium Consulate and next to a Jewish-owned restaurant, killing two police officers and injuring another, according to press reports. The restaurant, Positano, could have been the target. A Positano employee said a colleague stopped three suspects as they entered the restaurant. One of the suspects fled, and the other two died in the blasts. Belgian security cameras showed the bombers tried but failed to enter the restaurant. Belgian officials, including Foreign Minister Louis Michel, said the restaurant was probably the target. According to press reports, about 14 persons (ages 18-22) took part in the five attacks, killing a total of 42 persons and injuring at least 100. Several of those arrested were cooperating with police. According to press reports, the group al-Sirat al Mustaqim—with possible links to al-Qaida—is responsible. [Read More]
