They can be sculptedin deep relief out of a temple doorway and, therefore, remain attachedto the doorway on their back side. The earliest columnettes are round,sculpted with bands themselves sculpted with decorative motifs. Later inthe Angkorian period, the columnettes are octagonal in shape, and bearmore complex and abundant sculpted decor on the concentric bands.
